10 Signs That Tells You Have A Hormone Imbalance

10 sign of hormonal imbalance If you are experiencing mood swings, bloated stomach, an ache in the abdominal area then your hormones could be the reason. Hormones are the chemical messengers that control the most major functions in our body, from hunger to reproduction. It is normal to have fluctuation in hormonal level during mensuration, pregnancy and menopause. But, certain medicines and health issue can disturb the level of hormones causing hormone imbalance in the body. And, irregular periods can be the symptom of a polycystic ovarian syndrome.

There are many physical signs that tell you are suffering from hormone imbalance:

1. Irregular Periods

The average mensuration cycle is 28 days long. It can range from 21 to 35 days in adults and 21-45 days in teens. The change in the level of hormones like estrogen and progesterone controls the mensuration cycle. And, if yours doesn’t come around the same time every month, or you skip it for a month or two, it means you are either lacking or having one of these hormones in excess.

While low progesterone leads to depression, mood swings, crying uncontrollably, acne and despondency, high estrogen cause pain, tender breast, heavy periods and bloating.  Women in their 40’s and 50’s can experience irregular periods due to perimenopause. It is the time before menopause.

2. Chronic Acne

Acne during periods is normal around your chin and jaw line. But if acne doesn’t clear up can be the indication of a hormonal problem. Androgen is the male hormone that is also present in women contribute to acne flare-up during the periods by stimulating the oil glands. This type of acne is painful and inflamed.

3. Indigestion 

Hormones in our body control the very basic thing like hunger and digestion. When the level of progesterone and estrogen are higher or lower than usual it directly affect our eating habits and digestion. During the period you may experience nausea, diarrhoea, bloating and stomach pain.

4. Mood Swing

They are supposed to be caused by the fluctuation in hormones especially estrogen. Feeling emotional, irritable, sadness, anger and anxiety are the most common symptom of mood swing during periods. As fast the level of estrogen changes as do the level of emotions.

5. Fatigue

It is the most common symptom. You feel tired all the time. You want to just lie down and sleep. While the excess of progesterone makes you sleepy during your periods, the less production of thyroid drains your energy and makes you feel tired.

6. Sleep Problem

Hormones influence our sleeping pattern of going to bed and wake up time. Low level of progesterone makes it hard for you to fall asleep. Low level of estrogen are the reason of hot flashes and night sweat during mensuration.

7. Weight Gain

Weight gain during periods is not only from fluid or water retention in your body. Hormones are the reason. As the level of estrogen goes down craving for food increases and thus contribute to weight gain during periods. If the weight gets back to normal after periods then it is just the fluid and water retention and if not your extra calorie is to be blamed.

8. Excessive Hair Growth

Irregular periods are closely related to excess hair growth on face and body. It is also called hirsutism. High level of testosterone in women is the reason for excessive facial hair. Hair can be darker and thicker.

9. Headache

Irregular headaches during and before periods indicate the low-level of estrogen. As the periods over, the level of estrogen starts to rise and as your headaches.

10. Vaginal Dryness

Estrogen triggers the vaginal wall to produce vaginal fluid that compromises of water, vaginal cell and microorganism. It prevents fungal and bacterial infection. Low level of hormones reduces the fluid and leads to dryness.
