I was so ready to book my laser session at salon when i saw Braun Silk Expert IPL Hair Removal System on my way out of the shopping mall. I was both excited and anxious to try it on my own.
Excited, because i did not have to constantly go down the waxing/epilating lane every other week. Yes! my hair grow that fast. Anxious, because i did not know if it will be as effective as a salon laser treatment given they are far more expensive.
Braun silk expert device is bigger and heavier than i expected. Use of gold color gives this a premium look with a sleek design. It comes with a razor which came handy as i never owned a razor. I’m not into reading instruction manual but this time i read it to the ‘T’ in fear of burning myself.
Still not assured of burning part, i tested it on ‘Vikram’ first. Treating him, gave me some confidence to do it on my own. To start with IPL, you need to shave the body part you want to treat. I started with my legs. Gillete Venus Razor was gentle on skin and did a great job. A person who does not know how to shave, start with this.
It is a pretty easy device to use. Just plug it into the power and start zapping. But, before that you need to remember a few things. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light that regularly flashes when the two sensors come in contact with your skin. It is advised not to look directly at the device while it’s flashing. Looking into them can give you headache and an aching eye.
Get ready for that Zap – a hot band snapping under your skin. It feels hot for a fraction of a second. You can stop for a moment and start again. But, do not flash more than twice on the exact same area. It can cause discoloration, redness and burning.
Braun silk expert works when the light sensor on the both side indicate white light. That means it is in contact with skin and ready to flash. If the light is red, it will not flash.
You have to be creative while handling the device. Your body is not a flat canvas. Adjust the device – horizontally, vertically or diagonally, making sure that the sensors are directly in contact with your skin.
What To Expect On First Week
First Day, i felt my legs were hot even after 2 hour of using IPL. It took time for my skin to cool down completely.
By the end of the week, hair grew back as expected. IPL did not make much or any difference in reducing hair growth. But then, i did not expected it to be. It is no miracle product or any other laser treatment, that will show results on its first go. You need to be consistent – use it every week on the same day, if possible to get results.
First day, i was more comfortable using the device. I knew what to expect – the zapping, and the heat. This time heat did not last longer. I felt brave enough to start my underarms.
By the end of the week, I saw reduction in my hair growth. Even though my legs were shaved, it was more like a stubble than a full growth.
Definitely, there were some areas where hair grew back faster. On closer look, i realized i missed those areas on my second session of treatment. The untreated part was closer to the bones where you can hardly use the device horizontally.
First day, got a hold of the device and make it work vertically on those untreated area around the leg bone and knees.
By the end of 3rd week, i could see an improvement in the thickness of the hair. Growth was fine excluding the stubborn areas with coarse hair. I was feeling confident enough to just shave my legs and go out wearing shorts.
However, i could see dark hair under my skin but nothing that would bother me about my bare legs. You can make it work. Or That’s just me!
Braun Silk Expert 5 IPL BD5001
This is the model i’m using for treatment. I choose this because of:
Automatic skin tone sensor – I did not wanted to burn myself adjusting to the skin tone setting.
3,00,000 Flashes – This many flashes are more than most IPL devices are offering in the market. It is suppose to deliver an equivalent of 15 years of full body treatments.
Face & Body – Works on both face & body ( including bikini areas).
Gliding Mode – You don’t have to flash manually every time. It flashes automatically when comes in contact with your skin in gliding mode.
Economical – Cost effective compared to other IPL with face & body feature.
FDA Approved – Derived from professional light technology, is clinically tested for safe and effective use at home.
Gentle Mode – For sensitive area, you can use gentle mode on a low energy level.
Suitable Skin Tone
IPL works best on fair/medium skin tone with darker hair. Do not believe anybody who says IPL home devices can work on light/bleached hair. It simply does not.
Came back from vacation with tan? it does not flashes on heavily tanned skin.
How To Use Braun IPL AT-Home
- First, shave the body part you want to treat. Do not use on cut, bruises or open wounds.
- Make sure you don not have any lotion/cream on before using IPL device. It can react and cause discoloration.
- Wear protective googles or spectacles while flashing the device.
- In beginning, wait for a moment or two before flashing the next pulse. Let your skin adjust. Do not overwhelm yourself.
- Use icepack to cool down the heated skin, if needed.
- Glide the device horizontally on larger areas and vertically on narrow area like the forearms and legs.
The Dont’s While Using IPL
- Do not use retinols, benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid, glycolic acid, tretinoin (Retin-A), Accutane, alpha-hydroxy acids, etc. at-least 60 days before IPL administration
- Do not use any skin cream/ lotion after treatment.
- Do not take hot shower after IPL session.
- Pregnant woman should avoid IPL treatment. The connection is not established yet but you can never be too cautious.
Trick To Get Better Results
Treat yourself in bright light or near a window in day time. It makes it easier for device to sense your skin tone. In low light, it does not flash as often as it should.
