Pranayam And Your Brain

Pranayam means a pause in the movement of breath. For thousands of years, Yogis believed that disturbed nasal breathing can be a cause of many health problems. Nose is directly linked to your brain and nervous system.

This breathing practice affects your brain and how you feel at a given moment.

Breathing through your left nostril activates the right hemisphere of your brain that is responsible for all the creativity and art you do.

The same goes with right nostril breathing, it activates the left hemisphere of your brain that performs all the logical and analytical part for you such as science and mathematics respectively.

How To Do Pranayam?

Pranayam starts with left nostril breathing followed by right nostril breathing practice. Breathing with left nostril makes you calm and breathing through right brings energy to your body.

  • Sit cross-legged or Indian style.
  • Close your eyes and relax.
  • Make pose for pranayama. Fold your index finger and middle finger leaving thumb, ring finger and little finger open.

  • Close your right nostril with thumb and inhale slowly with left nostril filling your lungs to the capacity.
  • Now close your left nostril and exhale slowly through your right nostril.
  • Repeat the pattern for a few minutes to 15 minutes.
  • Concentrate on your breathing.
Tips to remember:
  1. Do pranayam empty stomach.
  2. Do not eat an hour before and after pranayama.
  3. 10-15 minutes a day can really boost your mind and body.
  4. People of any age can perform pranayam for a better health.
