Essential Oils For Oily Itchy Scalp Treatment

Smooth, shiny hair is desired by all but hair tends to get dry and oily as the weather changes. In addition, heat and hair styling products strip hair from its natural oil. As a result, hair becomes lifeless and more prone to breakage and split ends. In that situation, essential oils may be your saviour.

Essential oils have been used for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes for thousands of years. They are obtained by distillation and cold pressing process. The essential oil that is used for the cosmetic and healing purpose is either distilled or cold pressed. The chemically extracted oils don’t give the desired results.

How To Use?
  1. For Hair rinse, put a few drops of oil into some water and give a final rinse to your hair after washing and conditioning.
  2. With hair conditioner, mix a few drops in conditioner depending on the length of your hair and keep it for as long as you keep your regular conditioner. Wash thoroughly.
  3. After wash, rub a few drop into your palm after washing and massage into your hair scalp. Now mix a few into conditioner and use it on the ends of hair. Keep for a few minutes before washing. This will add shine and softness to your hair and make them manageable.
Essential Oil for Oily Scalp

1. Rosemary oil

Packed with antioxidants, it is one of the leading essential oil in promoting hair growth. It effectively stimulates the blood flow to the scalps for healthy hair growth. It is known for its property to treat dandruff, itchiness, extra sebum production and irritated scalps.

Add a few drops of rosemary oil to your massage oil to stimulate your hair scalp before washing. Leave for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Wrap hair in a hot towel for intense treatment. You can try blending it with lavender oil, thyme oil and peppermint oil for more goodness.

2. Lavender oil

Known for its therapeutic properties, it is all hair type oil as it treats the dry flaky scalp and balances the natural oil on the oily scalp. It’s antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties make it’s a valuable oil for many purposes. It makes hair soft and shiny. It also stops hair fall with regular use.

Mix a few drops of lavender oil to your olive oil, coconut oil or jojoba oil for the oil massage. Leave overnight or for 1 hour with the towel wrap.

3. Ylang Ylang oil

For its sweet aroma, it is extensively used by fragrance industry. The antiseptic property soothes the scalp and stimulates hair growth. It is used to treat dandruff as it balances the natural scalp oil.

Mix a few drops into your hair oil and get all the goodness of this scented oil.

4. Tea Tree oil

Famous for its antimicrobial action, it is used in treating acne and dandruff for years. It relieves dry itchy scalp and maintains the oil on the oily scalp. It is a strong essential oil and better be used with other carrier oils.

Mix a few drops of tea tree oil to the almond oil or coconut oil for hair massage. Keep it for at least 20-30 minutes before washing.

5. Lemon oil

Want some golden highlights in hair without using hair colours? then this is the oil for you. Other than treating the oily scalp, regular use adds golden highlights to your hair. It also relieves the dry itchy scalp with dandruff. The only thing of caution with this oil is not to go under sunlight after using it.

Add a few drops of lemon oil to your massage oil. Massage your hair in circular motion. Leave for 30 minutes before washing.

6. Cedarwood oil

With warm woodsy aroma, it is known to normalise the production of natural oil on the scalp. It’s antiseptic and astringent property is good for both dry and oily hair conditions. This stimulates hair follicles and scalp for healthy hair production. It is also used to treat dandruff.

Mix it with coconut oil for a hair massage. Leave overnight or for an hour before washing.

7. Lemongrass oil

It works as good as lemon oil. It slow downs the production of sebum on hair scalp.

8. Basil oil

Extracted from the leaves of basil, it good for oily hair and scalp. It stimulates blood circulation into the scalp and promotes hair growth.

  1.  Essential oil needs carrier oils for the application.
  2. Different essential oil serves a different purpose.
  3. Pregnant women should consult doctors before using.
  4. These are concentrated oil. Use in the small amount.
  5. Know before hand if you are allergic to any of essential oil.
