In getting the fairest skin, there is no shortage of weird skin trends and tools. Heard about jade rollers, snail mucous, bees venom and the honorable 24K gold mask? It is time to rewind the age old shaving. Dermaplaning, we could also say ‘shaving your face’ but in a very clinical way. Dermaplaning involves a smaller blade to slough off dead skin cells including facial hair. Scary! i know right. But to give you a little confidence it is not the farthest from shaving your legs.
The answer is simple – the way my skin feels and look. The effect is instant. With no hair fuzz and dead skin cells, skin looks radiant. I would go as far saying that i like it better waxing and threading. Both methods gives me ingrown hair that turns in to inflamed spots. Dermaplaning has not given me any new acne but i was careful enough to avoid any. Remind you i do not have any active flare-ups right now and not using any chemical exfoliants.

Is dermaplaning right for you?
Dermaplaning can be done on any skin type – sun damage, fine lines, very dry skin and dull skin are great candidates, except skin with acne. So, those with en-flamed acne should pass on it until their complexion clears up.

How dermaplaning helps?
Primary reason you do dermaplaning is to remove peach fuzz/ vellus hair/ facial hair. But in doing so, blade get rid of a superficial layer of dead skin as well. The brightening effect on the skin is immediate. After all you have eliminated one thing hiding your skin.
Apart from the radiant effect – makeup goes on smoothly, skin care products sink in better. Dermaplaning provide a blank canvas for other peeling agents, suggested dermatologists.
How to do dermaplaning at home?
Dermaplaning is more or less like shaving. If you have not seen a video some influencer shaving their faces? it is time. Watch it before doing it at home. A steady hand is all that matter for dermaplaning to work. Technique uses a single10 gauge scalpel at dermatologist. But for at-home dermaplaning tools are a little safer.
It’s important to clean your skin before shaving followed by a toner like witch hazel to avoid infection(in case). Although you can watch the video and do it yourself, i have 2 different methods you can try to avoid irritation and razor burn.
For dry skin, Slather oil on your moist skin for about 2 minutes in order to soften your skin. Do not use essential oils.
For oily skin, apply a thin layer of gel moisturiser/aloe vera gel/ hyaluronic acid lotion for 2 minutes before dermaplaning.
Now, hold the skin taut with a finger from one hand. With the other, make short feather like stroke at 45 degree angle. Follow your hairline toward the center of your face, avoiding your brows, eyes, nose, and mouth.
Apply skin-care products as usual, and sterilize the blade. Run it under hot water and wash it with the antibacterial hand wash. Dry and store in its plastic case. Do not reuse the blade more than twice or thrice otherwise you’ll risk infection.
What should you do post-dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a resurfacing treatment making skin sensitive. So, it goes without saying apply sunscreen religiously afterwards. If you have normal/dry skin take advantage of the treatment and slather hydrating serums and moisturizers. Skin is particularly receptive, will absorb skin care better. Stick to hyrdating products rather than exfoliating treatments.
Sensitive/acne prone/oily skin should not apply anything directly after the treatment. If the skin is in anyway irritated, applying skin care can backfire. I trust hyaluronic acid after dermaplaning for my sensitive acne-prone skin. Hyaluronic acid is anti-inflammatory in nature with added benefits of hydration.

Although dermaplaning is almost for everybody, skin with cystic acne, pigmentation, cold sore, skin allergies and hormonal imbalance. Excessive hair growth is also not an suitable candidate for the same.
After dermaplaning hair will grow darker or coarser is a myth but with hormonal imbalance may hold some candle to it.
Avoid any chemical peel/ physical exfoliating products/ brushes/ sponges altogether for a few days. Dermaplaning has done it for you. No need to go over board and do it all over again.
Do not use retinoids or any chemical peels before dermaplaning/shaving. Chances are you will worse your skin condition.
If you are unsure of the shaving/ dermaplaning, avoid altogether and stick to the regular methods of waxing and threading.
