Almost thirty years on earth, i still don’t know the history of valentine’s day. And to be honest, i never tried to learn the why’s. Now, do not frown upon my general knowledge and leave the letter all together. But let’s focus on the better question, why only 1 day in 365 days. I don’t want to sound greedy here. I love roses and gifts once in a while even if i have to drag my husband into a store myself.
Year after years, i have seen valentine’s day through many glasses, literally. I was not surprised when a friend of mine called to tell me that she is getting married on the V-day. She wanted to make the day more memorable. And i could not agree more over the phone. Surely, she is not the only one. Even the google search of V-day is more enthralling in recent years than a wikileaks.
Down my memory lane, V-day was a ticklish subject for school administration. They would mow all the roses from the school lawn to lay the ground rules for the day. And you were smart enough not to look funnily at your fellow mates. If not, you became next interesting subject for your PE teacher. So, yeah, it used to be a ordinary day on the ‘not-so-ordinary’ day.
As i got older and went to college, i became a part of this cool gang who thought wearing red on Valentine’s day was ‘too cliché’. Decidedly, black was the new red. The trouble was my mind zoned out at the word black. On the very day, i was the only red sheep in the pack of black. And i thought, so much for a gang member. While their brains were contemplating the idea of kicking me out, i was having this lone lunch at the table eyeing the potential romeo-juliet.
When your age calls, office become another story altogether. Every other person became a potential match according to combination and permutation set on lunch tables. Any colleague leaving early was going on a date. The hush-hush gossip was not limited to the lunch tables. Boss was having the last laugh. Later in the day, you came to realize you were in many of them before today.
Remembering all the awkwardness, when i got up this morning. My phone was buzzing with the discount messages. Avail 20% discount on teeth whitening and avail 25% off on hair spa to keep away the bad hair day. Did they just assume my hair bad and teeth yellow? I took a minute to check my teeth and hair. No, nothing. So, there, happy valentine day to you too.
So, don’t take this day as the final love note in your life. Love is living every single day feeling it, touching it and making memories. Believe me when i say, not every valentine day is a love day but every day can be a valentine day.
